10 Movies Everyone Will Be Talking About This Fall
Summer blockbusters are winding down.
Now comes the season when movies get weird.
Darker thrillers.
Huge franchise returns.
Awards contenders.
Nostalgia sequels.
And at least a few films that are almost guaranteed to take over your social feed.
Fall 2026 is unusually stacked.
From the return of Practical Magic after 28 years to a new Hunger Games, another Japanese Godzilla, Tom Cruise doing something completely different, and Robert Downey Jr. returning to Marvel as Doctor Doom, the next few months are packed with movies people will be arguing about.
So if you only want to know the films most likely to dominate conversations this fall, start here.
1. Practical Magic 2
Why everyone will be talking about it:
Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are back after 28 years.
That alone is enough.
The original Practical Magic was released in 1998 and slowly grew from a mixed-reception fantasy romance into a full-blown cult classic.
Now Bullock and Kidman are returning as Sally and Gillian Owens, alongside Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest.
The sequel also introduces a younger generation of the Owens family, including characters played by Joey King and Maisie Williams.
The movie begins its global theatrical rollout on September 9, 2026.
This one has an unusually powerful combination:
90s nostalgia.
Witchcore.
Sandra Bullock’s return.
Nicole Kidman.
And fans who have literally been waiting decades.
Buzz level:
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
2. Resident Evil
Why everyone will be talking about it:
Because Hollywood is trying Resident Evil again.
And this time the director is Zach Cregger, whose work in modern horror has made people very curious about what he’ll do with one of gaming’s biggest horror franchises.
Sony lists the new film for September 18, 2026, with a cast including Austin Abrams, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser.
This reboot has a big challenge.
Resident Evil fans have seen several wildly different live-action interpretations already.
So the real question isn't:
“Can Resident Evil make money?”
It’s:
Can someone finally make the Resident Evil movie fans actually want?
Buzz level:
🔥🔥🔥🔥
3. Digger
Why everyone will be talking about it:
Tom Cruise + Alejandro G. Iñárritu.
That combination alone sounds strange enough to work.
Iñárritu, the director behind Birdman and The Revenant, returns with his first English-language feature in years.
Tom Cruise stars as a powerful man trying to convince the world he can save humanity from a catastrophe he may have helped create.
And somehow the film is being described as an apocalyptic black comedy.
It arrives in theaters on October 2, 2026.
Cruise is usually associated with:
Jets.
Motorcycles.
Impossible stunts.
Running.
Lots of running.
This sounds completely different.
Which may be exactly why people are going to pay attention.

4. The Social Reckoning
Why everyone will be talking about it:
Because The Social Network is getting a follow-up.
Aaron Sorkin returns with The Social Reckoning, this time focusing on fallout surrounding Facebook and the 2021 Facebook Files revelations.
The cast is ridiculous:
Jeremy Strong
Jeremy Allen White
Mikey Madison
Bill Burr
And Jeremy Strong is playing Mark Zuckerberg.
Sony has scheduled the film for October 9, 2026.
The original Social Network became one of the defining movies about the early social-media era.
Now we're living in the world that movie helped predict.
That makes this sequel potentially much more uncomfortable.
Buzz level:
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
5. Street Fighter
Why everyone will be talking about it:
Video-game movies are suddenly allowed to be successful now.
And Street Fighter is one of the biggest gaming brands still waiting for a modern blockbuster adaptation.
The new film stars a very unusual mix of actors and personalities, including Noah Centineo, Andrew Koji, Callina Liang, Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes, Eric André and 50 Cent.
Paramount is releasing the movie on October 16, 2026.
That cast alone guarantees internet discussion.
If the fights look good?
This could explode.
If they look terrible?
It could also explode.
Just in a very different way.
Buzz level:
🔥🔥🔥🔥
6. Clayface
Why everyone will be talking about it:
Because DC is apparently making a body-horror movie about a Batman villain.
Not a normal superhero film.
A horror movie.
Clayface, the shapeshifting Gotham villain, gets his own theatrical film directed by James Watkins.
DC's current materials list the movie for October 23, 2026.
This is exactly the kind of project that could help redefine what “comic-book movie” means.
If DC manages to make something genuinely disturbing rather than another standard CGI superhero film, people are going to notice.
Buzz level:
🔥🔥🔥🔥
7. Godzilla Minus Zero
Why everyone will be talking about it:
Because Godzilla Minus One changed expectations for what a Godzilla movie could be.
Now director Takashi Yamazaki is returning with Godzilla Minus Zero.
TOHO has confirmed a Japanese release on November 3, 2026, followed by a North American release on November 6.
It will also mark the first near-simultaneous Japan/North America release in the history of the Japan-produced Godzilla series.
That's huge.
Godzilla Minus One won people over not just with spectacle, but with actual human drama.
So expectations for this follow-up are extremely high.

8. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping
Why everyone will be talking about it:
Young Haymitch Abernathy.
That's basically all Hunger Games fans needed to hear.
Sunrise on the Reaping takes place 24 years before Katniss Everdeen's story and focuses on the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.
That means twice the normal number of tributes.
And yes, this is the Games Haymitch survived.
The movie arrives on November 20, 2026.
The cast includes names such as:
Ralph Fiennes.
Glenn Close.
Jesse Plemons.
Kieran Culkin.
Elle Fanning.
And more.
The Hunger Games franchise is one of those rare properties that can disappear for years and immediately become relevant again.
Expect TikTok edits everywhere.

9. Focker-In-Law
Why everyone will be talking about it:
Because apparently we’re getting another Meet the Parents movie.
Yes.
Really.
Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro are back.
And this time Ariana Grande is involved.
Universal officially lists Focker-In-Law for November 25, 2026.
This could go one of two ways.
A genuinely funny nostalgia revival.
Or a movie that makes everyone ask:
“Why did they bring this back?”
Either way, people are going to talk about it.
Buzz level:
🔥🔥🔥🔥
10. Avengers: Doomsday
Why everyone will be talking about it:
Three words:
Robert Downey Jr.
But not as Iron Man.
He’s playing Doctor Doom.
Marvel officially releases Avengers: Doomsday on December 18, 2026, and the cast is absurdly large.
Chris Hemsworth.
Pedro Pascal.
Florence Pugh.
Vanessa Kirby.
Anthony Mackie.
Patrick Stewart.
Ian McKellen.
Tom Hiddleston.
And many more.
The film brings together heroes from multiple universes against an existential threat.
But let's be realistic.
The biggest reason people will show up is curiosity.
Marvel spent years turning Robert Downey Jr. into Tony Stark.
Now they’re asking audiences to look at the same actor and see one of Marvel’s greatest villains.
That is either genius...
or incredibly risky.

Bonus: Dune: Part Three
Yes, this should probably be on the list.
But it sits right on the edge of the holiday season, so I'm giving it bonus status.
Denis Villeneuve returns for the third chapter of his Dune saga, continuing Paul Atreides’ story with Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya.
Letterboxd's August data ranked Dune: Part Three as its community's most anticipated unreleased film of 2026.
So if we're talking pure cinephile hype?
This may actually beat everything on the list.
The Weirdest Thing About Fall 2026
Look at these movies again.
They reveal something interesting about Hollywood right now.
Half the season is about bringing something back.
Practical Magic.
Resident Evil.
Street Fighter.
Godzilla.
The Hunger Games.
Meet the Parents.
Avengers.
Hollywood is deeply addicted to familiar intellectual property.
But at the same time, some of the most interesting films are trying to twist familiar brands into something different.
A Batman villain becomes horror.
Tom Cruise makes an apocalyptic black comedy.
The Social Network returns to examine what social media became.
Godzilla continues its serious Japanese revival.
That makes this fall more interesting than a simple sequel season.
If You Only Watch Five
If I could only pick five right now:
1. Digger
Because Tom Cruise working with Iñárritu is too strange to ignore.
2. The Social Reckoning
Because we're living inside the consequences of social media.
3. Godzilla Minus Zero
Because Minus One set the bar incredibly high.
4. Sunrise on the Reaping
Because Haymitch's Hunger Games story has massive fan interest.
5. Avengers: Doomsday
Because Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom may become the biggest pop-culture conversation of December.
The Movie Most Likely to Surprise Everyone
Clayface.
Seriously.
People may go into it expecting a minor DC side project.
If it actually delivers genuine body horror inside the Batman universe, it could become the movie everyone suddenly starts talking about.
The Biggest Nostalgia Play
Practical Magic 2.
Twenty-eight years is a ridiculous amount of time between films.
But that's exactly why the reunion feels like an event.
The Safest Blockbuster
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.
The franchise already has an enormous audience.
The book provides a built-in fanbase.
And Haymitch is one of the series' most loved characters.
It's very difficult to imagine this one disappearing quietly.
The Biggest Gamble
Avengers: Doomsday.
Marvel is taking one of the most recognizable actors in MCU history...
and asking audiences to accept him as someone completely different.
If it works, people will call it brilliant.
If it doesn't?
The internet will have content for months.
The Bottom Line
Fall 2026 isn't lacking movies.
The problem may be deciding what to watch.
September starts with witches and horror.
October gives us Tom Cruise, Facebook drama, video-game chaos and DC body horror.
November brings Godzilla, Hunger Games and nostalgia comedy.
Then December basically says:
Fine. Here's the Avengers.
And somewhere in all of that, Dune: Part Three is waiting too.
So yes.
Cancel a few weekend plans.
You’re probably going to need them.
