Why Google Maps Doesn’t Work Properly in South Korea — What Tourists Should Use Instead
You land at Incheon Airport, grab your luggage, turn on your phone, and open Google Maps.
You’ve used it in New York, Tokyo, Paris, Bangkok — basically everywhere.
Then you try to get walking directions to a restaurant in Seoul.
And suddenly… things get weird.
Routes may be unavailable, walking directions may not work as expected, and some restaurants, cafés, or small businesses can be harder to find than they should be.
Your phone isn’t broken.
Google Maps simply works differently in South Korea.
And if you’re planning a trip to Korea in 2026, there are two apps you should probably install before you arrive:
Naver Map and KakaoMap.
Here’s what’s going on — and how to navigate Korea without getting lost.
Does Google Maps Work in South Korea?
Yes — but not the way most international travelers expect.
You can still use Google Maps in Korea to:
Search for many major attractions
See the general location of neighborhoods
Save places before your trip
Check satellite imagery
Share locations with friends
Find some public transportation information
The problem appears when you want to use Google Maps as your main navigation app.
Walking and driving directions have historically been limited in South Korea, and local business information may not be as complete or current as what you’ll find on Korean platforms.
That makes a big difference when you're trying to find a tiny café in Seongsu, a restaurant hidden inside a building in Gangnam, or the correct entrance to a subway station.
Why Is Google Maps Limited in Korea?
The short answer is:
Map data and national security regulations.
South Korea has historically restricted the overseas export of detailed geographic map data.
Because Google processes much of its mapping data using servers outside South Korea, those restrictions prevented Google Maps from operating with the same level of detailed mapping and navigation that travelers are used to in many other countries.
That’s why this isn't really a problem with your GPS signal or your phone.
It's largely about the map data Google has been allowed to use.
But Something Changed in 2026
There is an important update.
In February 2026, the South Korean government gave Google conditional approval to export detailed 1:5,000-scale map data overseas.
That could eventually allow Google Maps to offer much better walking and driving navigation in Korea.
However, conditional approval does not mean every Google Maps feature suddenly started working overnight.
As of 2026, travelers should still avoid relying exclusively on Google Maps for navigating South Korea.
Think of Google Maps as a useful companion.
For actual local navigation, use a Korean map app.
The Best Alternative: Naver Map
If you're going to install only one additional navigation app for Korea, I would start with Naver Map.
Naver is one of South Korea's largest internet platforms, and its map service contains an enormous amount of local information.
For travelers, it is especially useful for:
Walking directions
Subway routes
Bus routes
Real-time public transportation information
Restaurants
Cafés
Shops
Attractions
Building entrances
Local addresses
It also supports an English interface, which makes it much easier for international travelers than it used to be.
Why Naver Map Is So Useful
Imagine you're looking for a popular café in Seoul.
Google Maps might show the café.
Naver Map may show much more:
The exact location
Which floor it's on
Nearby subway exits
Korean reviews
Opening hours
Photos
Other branches
Bus routes
Walking directions
That local information can save you a surprising amount of time.
What About KakaoMap?
The other app worth having is KakaoMap.
Kakao is another huge Korean technology company and operates services used by millions of people in Korea.
KakaoMap is particularly useful for:
Local navigation
Walking routes
Bus information
Subway navigation
Driving directions
Checking unfamiliar Korean addresses
It can also be helpful as a backup when a place doesn't appear correctly in another map service.
I wouldn't necessarily tell a first-time tourist to constantly switch between three different map apps.
A much simpler setup is:
Google Maps → discovery and trip planning
Naver Map → everyday navigation
KakaoMap → backup and cross-checking
That combination covers almost everything most visitors will need.
The Biggest Mistake Tourists Make
Here's the mistake I see international travelers make:
They search for a restaurant on Instagram or TikTok, copy its English name, and paste it into a Korean map app.
Nothing appears.
So they assume the restaurant doesn't exist.
Usually, the problem is the name.
Many Korean businesses use different English spellings across Google, Instagram, Naver, and their official pages.
For example, a café might appear under:
Cafe Onion
on one platform but have its Korean listing stored under:
카페 어니언
on another.
The Easy Fix
If you can't find a place:
Search for it on Google.
Find its Korean name or Korean address.
Copy the Korean text.
Paste it into Naver Map or KakaoMap.
This works surprisingly often.
Save Your Hotel Address in Korean
This is one of the easiest things you can do before your flight.
Save your hotel's:
English name
Korean name
Korean road address
Take a screenshot too.
Why?
Because if you ever need help from a taxi driver, hotel employee, police officer, or local resident, showing the Korean address is often much easier than trying to explain the English hotel name.
This becomes even more important if you're staying at a small guesthouse or Airbnb.
What Should You Use for Taxis?
For taxis, download Kakao T.
It's one of Korea's major taxi-hailing apps and is much more useful than trying to flag down random taxis in busy areas.
If you're traveling around Seoul, Busan, or other major cities, having Kakao T installed can make getting around much easier.
So my basic Korea travel app setup would be:
Navigation
Naver Map
Backup Map
KakaoMap
Taxi
Kakao T
Translation
Papago
Familiar Global Map
Google Maps
You don't necessarily need to use all five constantly.
But having them installed before arriving can save you a lot of frustration.
Google Maps vs Naver Map vs KakaoMap
| Feature | Google Maps | Naver Map | KakaoMap |
|---|---|---|---|
| General trip planning | Excellent | Good | Good |
| Walking navigation in Korea | Limited / changing | Excellent | Excellent |
| Public transportation | Useful | Excellent | Excellent |
| Local restaurants & cafés | Good | Excellent | Excellent |
| English friendliness | Excellent | Good | Moderate |
| Korean local information | Limited | Excellent | Excellent |
| Best for first-time tourists | Secondary app | Recommended | Backup |
For most international visitors, Naver Map is the best place to start.
A Simple Korea Navigation Strategy
You don't need to abandon Google Maps completely.
Instead, use each app for what it does best.
Before Your Trip
Use Google Maps, travel blogs, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube to discover places you want to visit.
Once You Find a Place
Search the same location on Naver Map.
Save the Korean listing.
When You're Actually Going There
Use Naver Map for the route.
If something looks strange, cross-check it with KakaoMap.
That's it.
You don't need to make navigating Korea complicated.
One More Thing: Don't Trust English Search 100%
English support on Korean apps has improved dramatically.
But Korea is still a Korean-language country.
Smaller restaurants, pop-up stores, salons, markets, and newly opened cafés may be easier to find using their Korean names.
When in doubt:
Copy the Korean name.
It is probably the single most useful navigation trick for foreign travelers in Korea.
So, Should You Delete Google Maps?
Definitely not.
Google Maps is still useful in South Korea.
And because Korea approved Google's map-data export under certain conditions in 2026, Google Maps could become much more capable in Korea over time.
But for a trip right now, I wouldn't make it my only navigation app.
Before flying to Korea, install at least:
Naver Map + Google Maps
And if you want a backup:
Add KakaoMap.
It takes a couple of minutes before your trip and could save you an hour of wandering around Seoul later.
Quick Answer
Does Google Maps work in South Korea?
Yes, but some navigation and local mapping functions have historically been more limited than in other countries.
What should tourists use instead?
For most travelers, Naver Map is the best primary navigation app, with KakaoMap as a useful alternative.
Can I still use Google Maps?
Absolutely. It's great for discovering places, saving locations, and general trip planning. Just don't make it your only navigation tool in Korea.
